Nothing prepares you quite as much as simply doing it.

Flexible Intentions

For this photoshoot I wanted to get close up shots with a lovely blurred background.

However, it ended up snowing which help give off a great sense of depth. I decided then to widen the shot and I’m glad, I feel like I got some lovely moments and actions as a result.

Relinquishing Control

It was such a relief, I realised, to not have to worry about the subject at all. I started this job thinking that I’ll just work around the dogs and whatever they decide to get up to. This mentality extended to camera settings too. I simply turned on aperture priority mode, specifically because this was what I wanted to play around with, and didn’t think about the settings at all.

This unfortunately resulted in missing some shots that required higher shutter but by the end of it, I still think I got some great shots.

Continuous Mode

When it comes to animals, burst mode/ continuous mode is great. It helps capture fast movements or moments you might not expect. However, I did find that shooting in this mode made me less intentional with the photos I wanted to take. While I had a lot of photos to sort through I am happy to use this mode, more so for animals than for children.

Overall

Animals are my favorite subjects for photos. I loved getting these casual pictures of Maya and Jaja and not thinking too much about settings, poses, and getting the perfect shot. I learned that by just being ready, the shots will come.
